Description:
This photograph of a female fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster) was taken through a dissecting scope and is at a magnification of 80X. Fruit flies have an amazing sense of taste that allows them to avoid harmful toxins. One such toxin, L-canavanine, is found in many legume plants. L-canavanine doesn't immediately kill an adult fruit fly; however, it does cause their larvae to die.
