Lobster buoys are used by lobstermen to mark the spot where their traps have been placed along the coast of New England. Each lobsterman has his own distinctly marked buoys, painted and designed to distinguish his buoys from those of other lobstermen. This applies to both commercial lobstermen and those who fish for pleasure. The paint used must be durable as well as water and salt resestant in order to hold up against the harsh elements.
