The Colors of Chemistry Photo Contest (the "Contest") is fully sponsored by Chemical Abstracts Service ("CAS" or the "Company"). Apple Inc. is not a sponsor of, nor is responsible for conducting, this contest.

By entering the Contest, you agree to comply with and be bound by the following official Contest rules (the “Rules”). Please review the Rules carefully.
ELIGIBILITY
The Contest is open only to individuals who have reached the age of majority in their jurisdiction of residence at the time of entry and who do not reside in a jurisdiction in which this Contest is prohibited or otherwise restricted by law, rule, or regulation. Employees and contractors of the American Chemical Society, CAS, and their immediate family members (spouse, parent, child, sibling, and their respective spouses, regardless of where they live) or persons living in the same households of such employees or contractors, whether or not related, are not eligible to enter the Contest.
HOW TO ENTER
To enter, you must first sign up on the Contest website or mobile device application by providing a unique username, password, and e-mail address. Then, use the upload form on the Contest website or mobile device application to upload your original, unpublished, and unedited photograph. Subject to the “General Rules” below, upload any photograph that you feel best fits our monthly chemistry-related theme along with a with a brief statement (100 words or less) describing how your photograph captures chemistry. Photographs must be submitted in JPEG (.jpg), PNG (.png), or GIF (.gif) format, and the file must be no larger than 5,120 K (5 MB).
Photograph entries may be submitted for any of the 12 monthly themes beginning on January 3, 2011 at 12:00 a.m. (Eastern Standard Time). You may enter photographs for up to 12 themes, but only one entry per theme is permitted. Entries must be received by 11:59 p.m. (Eastern Time) on the fifteenth day of the applicable Contest month (e.g., entries for the "Gardens" theme must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on August 15 to be eligible for the August 2011 Voting Phase). Please allow adequate time for submission as we are not responsible for delays in electronic transmission no matter where they occur.

HOW TO WIN
The Company will post all appropriate photographs and descriptions to the Contest website and mobile device application for visitors to view and vote. The Company reserves the right not to post any entry deemed inappropriate for the intent and purpose of the Contest.
During each applicable "Voting Phase" (set forth in the table above), Contest website visitors and mobile device application users will vote on entries following these criteria:
- Extent the photograph and description capture the chemistry-related theme
- Creativity of the photograph
- Technical quality of the photograph
One (1) monthly winner will be chosen based on the number of votes received. The photograph receiving the most votes at the end of the Voting Phase for the applicable month will win. In the event of a tie, Colors of Chemistry editorial staff will select the winning entry according to the judging criteria.
One (1) grand prize winner will be chosen at the conclusion of the Contest based on the number of votes received. The photograph receiving the most votes across all 12 months will win. In the event of a tie, Colors of Chemistry editorial staff will select the winning entry according to the judging criteria.
The winning photographs will be posted on the Contest website and mobile device application, and the entrant will be notified at the e-mail address provided in the sign-up form. All decisions are final on all matters relating to this Contest.
PRIZES
Each monthly winner will receive a Visa gift card for Fifty Dollars ($50.00). One grand prize winner will receive a digital SLR camera valued at up to $1,000. Federal, state and local taxes, and all similar fees and assessments, are the responsibility of the winner. The Company reserves the right to withhold taxes from each winning prize, as appropriate. No substitution or transfer of prizes will be accommodated or permitted, other than in the Company’s sole discretion.
GENERAL RULES
- NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER CONTEST.
- CONTEST IS VOID IN ANY JURISDICTION WHERE PROHIBITED OR OTHERWISE RESTRICTED BY LAW, RULE, OR REGULATION.
- Each entrant may be declared a monthly winner no more than twice during the duration of the Contest. In the event an entrant is declared the monthly winner based upon the number of votes received, but the entrant has already won two prior months of the Contest, the entrant with the second most votes at the end of the voting phase for the applicable month will be declared that month's winner.
- Each entrant may submit no more than one photograph per theme.
- Entries must have been taken by the entrant submitting the photograph.
- Entrants must own the full copyright to any photograph they enter in the Contest.
- Entries that (i) violate or infringe upon another person’s rights, including copyright, or (ii) feature the intellectual property of others (e.g., a sign containing a registered trademark) are not eligible.
- Entries in which a person is recognizable will not be accepted. The Company is unable to validate that the subject in the photograph has signed a valid Model's Release and authorized distribution of the photograph in which he or she appears.
- By entering, the winners may be asked to provide their original unedited photograph. Failing to do so may result in disqualification.
- Individuals may vote no more than one time per day.
- Automated voting of any kind is not allowed. Detection of said automated voting will lead to votes being voided.
- CAS may end the Contest at any time. The Contest Rules may change from time to time; therefore, entrants should read the rules before every submission. By your submission, you are acknowledging acceptance of, and compliance with, the rules at the time of your submission.
PUBLICATION
Contest entry constitutes permission for CAS to use entrants' names, photographs, and likenesses for advertising, marketing, and Contestal purposes, except as otherwise prohibited by law, without further compensation. By entering the Contest, you agree to provide CAS with a royalty-free, perpetual license to use your photograph. You further agree to hold CAS harmless from any visitor to this site making any unauthorized use of your photograph. Entries will not be returned.
DISQUALIFICATION
CAS, each of its legal representatives, its affiliates, subsidiaries, parents, agencies and their respective officers, directors, employees, and agents, are not responsible for lost, interrupted or unavailable network server, or other connections, miscommunications, failed telephone or computer transmissions or technical failure, lost online entries, jumbled, scrambled or misdirected transmissions, or other error of any kind, whether human, mechanical or electronic. Persons found tampering with or abusing any aspect of the Contest, as solely determined by CAS, will be disqualified. If entrant is disqualified for any of the above reasons, the Company reserves the right to terminate entrant’s eligibility to participate in the Contest. In the event that any portion of the Contest is compromised by virus, bugs, non-authorized human intervention or other causes beyond the control of the Company, which, in the sole opinion of the Company, corrupts, or impairs the administration, security, fairness or proper determination of the Contest, the Company reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to suspend or terminate the Contest or any part of the Contest, or any combination of the above. CAS, each of its legal representatives, its affiliates, parents, agencies and their respective officers, directors, employees, and agents are not responsible for any problem with entries generated by computer hardware or software malfunction, error or failure, whatever the cause. The Company’s sole responsibility for any irregular entry is replacement with another entry in a subsequent drawing, if any. The potential winner may be required to provide the Company with proof that the potential winner is the authorized account holder of the electronic mail address associated with the potential winning entry.
RELEASE
By participating in the Contest, each entrant agrees to release and hold harmless CAS and each of its legal representatives, its affiliates, subsidiaries, parents, agencies and their respective officers, directors, employees, and agents from any and all liability for any injuries, loss or damage of any kind arising from, or in connection with, the Contest including, but not limited to, liability arising from copyright infringement, improper use of likeness, personal injury, death, damages, or monetary loss. Restrictions, conditions, and limitations apply. By entering, each entrant further agrees that, in the event that there is any conflict or other inconsistency between the Rules and any advertisements, Contestal or marketing materials, e-mails or announcements relevant to the Contest, these Rules will govern. Any disputes arising out of or related to the Contest shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the District of Columbia (without regard to conflict of law principles). Should any part of these Rules be held invalid or unenforceable, that portion shall be construed consistent with applicable law and the remaining portions shall remain in full force and effect.
